Fabian is the English form of the late Roman title Fabianus. This was originally the surname Fabius that derived from a Latin faba for the broad bean, an important food crop in the Roman Empire. It entered a English language sustaining a Normans, but has never achieved a popularity of Fabien inside France and Fabiano in Italy.
